I know I mentioned in a pervious post that Sarah took me with her to work out with her personal trainer last week. We had a blast and her personal trainer told me that anytime I wanted to tag along I was more than welcome. (Living the furlough life people!)
Lucky for me, Sarah invited me to go back with her yesterday, and holy crap did her personal trainer Mavis totally kick our butts.
We met at the Washington Sports Club in Silver Spring around 11:30 and by the time we wrapped up about an hour later, I couldn’t lift my arms over my head, and my legs felt like jello.
It was such an amazing workout.
We started with some basic warm up stuff, toe touches, walking lunges, etc. to get our muscles ready to go, and then it was right into the hard work.
We focused pretty heavily on legs, which I found especially torturous since I had just done my first real run in ages the day before.
We did lots of variations of squats and lunges and some especially challenging butt exercises that I don’t even know how to describe other than it involved balancing on one leg and repeatedly bending down to touch a small cone. It was such a simple movement, but it killed my glutes.
We also did some killer core moves: weighted sit ups, reverse crunches and some sort of running man thing where you hold a plank and then twist your knee to touch your opposite wrist. I’m glad Mavis took pictures because I literally have no idea how to describe it.
We also did some pull ups and bicep curls. I used a 25 lb. bar for the bicep curls and it killed. By the end of the second set, my arms were on fire. I remember when 25 lbs was an easy weight for me. Womp, womp, injuries suck.
This is my “I think I’m going to die” face.
One thing I love about working out with Mavis is that she’s super encouraging and really good at goal-setting. So when she presents you with a move and you want to curl up in a ball and cry, she gives you a number of reps to do that’s challenging, but manageable. Plus she’s really good at the whole counting down thing so that you know just how long you have left before your next rest.
Plus it’s fun having a buddy to do the sessions with. Working out with Sarah is fun, and Mavis always puts together really awesome workouts. I loved that none of the moves we did today were the same as any of the moves we did last week. Mixing it up is good!
Have you ever worked out with a personal trainer? I totally wish I could on a more regular basis, but it doesn’t really fit in my budget (especially not while furloughed)!
