Becoming a foodie and tonight's documentary
As I've started reading more and more people's blogs, recently I've stumbled onto a bunch of foodie blogs by following all your links. While I don't know that I will ever have the patience to take snapshots of everything I eat before eating it, I do know that by reading these blogs, I've become a lot more interested in food.
As a runner, I've always been concerned with my eating. I want to make sure I'm putting the right stuff in so that I can perform my best when I'm running. But when it comes to creativity in the kitchen, I'm seriously lacking. So I've started turning to these foodie blogs for healthy recipes ideas.
Last night I tried the Chick Pea stir fry recipe that I found on Oh She Glows. It was delicious and even the BF liked it and he is a self-proclaimed veggie hater. The only downside was buying all those fresh veggies jacked my grocery bill up a bunch.
In other healthy eating news, I made my own trail mix yesterday to bring to work for breakfast this week. It contains granola with sliced almonds, sunflower seeds, soy nuts, raisins and craisins. Pretty delicious.
I guess the point of this ramble is that I'm making it a goal of mine to try out new healthy food recipes. If I remember, maybe I'll snap some photos from time to time, but if nothing else I'll keep you posted on how my journey into more creative cooking goes.

In other really awesome news, my roommate who works in the TV department at the Washington Post alerted me to a PBS show tonight about marathons. It'll be on at 8 p.m. and is only an hour long.
Here's the description from TV Guide:
Thirteen novices, ranging in age from 22 to 60, train nine months for the Boston Marathon. The group includes a former smoker, a heart-attack survivor and an overweight woman, and receives support from three-time Boston Marathon winner Uta Pippig and Donald Megerle, director of Tufts' annual President's Marathon Challenge. Included: comments from Timothy Noakes, a University of Cape Town sports-medicine expert; and Harvard bioanthropologist Daniel Lieberman.
I'm going to try to catch it even though it conflicts with the Biggest Loser. I can watch the second hour of BL and I'm sure figure out what I missed.

Good for you trying new recipes! It's fun and even better when they turn out good :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the PBS heads up. I may have to check that out!
Another blogger had this posted on their website, the video of the pbs special. I have it bookmarked, I think, at home and will try to send you the link.
ReplyDeleteOh wow Carlee that would be awesome! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI feel you on that! I've managed to take a few random pics of my prettier snacks and meals, but for the most part, I get my face stuffed, and then mutter, "oops, fuuhgott to taake a piuchture... om nom nom!"

the "marathon challenge" nova is also on dvd. we got it in on Netflix a few weeks ago, it's a really good story. kelley was looking for inspirational stories like that before the myrtle beach marathon, and it delivered.
ReplyDeleteand with the weigh in results coming up first thing on biggest liar tonight, i would check out the dvd.
and for the record, when i see food it is gone before anyone has time to take out the camera. i think you got your grocery bill backwards, though. getting all those fresh veggies shouldn't jack it up, it should replace all the processed crap you were buying before. 2/3 veggies and fruits, 1/3 meat and some whole grains. we shop mostly on the outside edges of the grocery store, and only go into the ailes for things like paper products and laundry detergent. talk about living on the edge!
it's great that you're getting more concious about food though. it's a lot of fun for me to control what i eat and be all natural. we cut our grocery bill a lot just by going all naturual. and i get recipe's all the time from Healthy Tipping Point in my blogroll. she's nuts for all natural!
Ohhh girl you're one up on me. I can't ever eat anything good LOL
ReplyDeleteTrying new foods and veggies has been my 2009 new year's resolution. Good luck with your new foodie adventures!
ReplyDeleteI too have been intrigued by a lot of the foodie blogs! have you checked out Caitlin at http://www.healthytippingpoint.com/ or Bobbi at http://nhershoes.blogspot.com/ ?? They are both great foodie blogs and don't just talk about food. I love trying some new things (new to me) that they make.
ReplyDeleteAbout the groceries. Yes, it may appear more expensive, but in the long run, doesn't it pay off? I just got asked yesterday at lunch "How can you afford to buy grapes this time of year?" I was in shock. First, I don't really think about the costs of fruits and veggies, I just buy. And second, grapes are good for you! LOL.
I am going to have to check out that PBS special. I am assuming that is 8pm EST? Thanks, Jess!
Re: Carolina John: Thanks for the tip about Nova on DVD. I completely forgot it was a two-part continuation tonight. Definitely watching that. As far as my grocery bill, I don't buy the processed crap like chips. I usually just buy yogurt, cereal, cottage cheese and granola bars and then dinner stuff. Note the lack of fruits and veggies. Hence the more expensive bill.
ReplyDeleteRe: teacherwoman: Yes I love Caitlin's blog. I'll have to check out Bobbi's too. And yes, the healthy stuff is definitely worth the extra money. And yep, that's 8 p.m. EST.
ReplyDeleteGReat post on the documentary..I would love to see it! I am definitely a foodie and I really wish I had the patience to take pictures of my food etc.. I LOVE reading the blogs so I welcome your comments on good ones. :)
ReplyDeleteI REALLY need to start actually using some of the amazing foodie recipes out there. I am totally lacking in the creativity dept and can eat the same thing every day... boring!
ReplyDeleteI know it's time for me to start watching what I eat because some of my pants are getting a bit tight around the waist. In a couple months, our co-op veggies will start coming in and we'll be so inundated with them that I'll eat THAT just to keep up.
ReplyDeleteI eat WAY more healthily from May to November because of our co-op.
The winter months both kick, and increase the avoirdupois of, my @$$.

ReplyDeleteI believe this is the link they had; sorry I don't remember who posted it originally
i need to get on the nutrition boat, but i am too lazy... for example - tonight i went into the kitchen to make dinner. decided i was too lazy to make anything so, i, had cereal. i know, i know. good luck experimenting and hopefully you can motivate me to put forth the extra effort too!
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking the same thing - I might never blog about everything I eat, but it has inspired me! We made our own granola bars the other day and I posted them. I can't wait to hear more about your healthy cooking when you feel like posting about it! :)

That's the fun thing about changing your diet, reaching critical mass so its not expensive!!! That basically means stocking your pantry with new stuff so you have it on hand instead of having to go out and buy it. Every time I want to try a new recipe, it costs a small fortune!
