A gorgeous weekend of no running

by - Monday, April 27, 2009

It was beautiful this weekend and hot, hot, hot. It was like Maryland forgot it was April and jumped straight to July. It was high 80's/low 90's Saturday and Sunday.

As far as running is concerned none happened. However, Saturday was Maryland Day -- a giant festival celebrating the awesomeness of UMD where you can get free food and ice cream and beer (at some places) and watch all kinds of cool demonstrations from different departments. The BF and I met up with some friends and spent the day trekking all over campus (totally counts as a workout) to see cool things, including the engineering department making a tornodo out of fire. Yea it was the coolest thing ever and of course my camera battery died.

In other interesting weekend news, Friday night BF, I and BF's good friend were out and the subject of running came up. And BF, who to be fair, was a little tipsy, decided he wanted to run a marathon. Like a full one. And then we started talking about triathlons and BF wanted to know how long an IronMan and Half IronMan were and he got this little gleam in his eye.

I was like ohhhh great. Now he's going to want to train for an IronMan. And then I'm going to have to because well let's not lie, if he's doing it than I am too because I'm just competitive like that. (I'm realllllly hoping BF forgets about the IronMan thing, I'm so not ready for that.)

When I asked him Sunday if he had meant the marathon thing he said yes. Needless to say, I decided not to remind him about IronMan.

On tap for tonight: Subbing yoga.

  1. if he wants to do a triathlon, have him start with sprints or olympic distance.

  2. Maryland Day is always SO much fun! We have a huge campus so trekking around is definitely a work-out. :)

  3. I will remind BF for you :-) You can do an Ironman, and don't worry, you have plenty of time to think about it!!

  4. haha, training for an ironman takes about 3 years. you need to do some sprints, maybe an international the first year, then a half ironman the second year. Plus you have to volunteer at an ironman event (at least an ironman branded event) to get in the registration line the next day for an ironman. So if he's willing to try some sprints in 2009, a half iron in 2010 + volunteer/register, then he can do a full ironman event in 2011.

if he's actually willing to make that much commitment (and you are too) then you can totally do it. It just takes a lot longer than you might expect.

This is my second year training, i'm doing a half iron in november, and i have no aspirations to do a full ironman. that might change after i do a half, but for now i'll be happy with 70.3 miles.

  6. I miss Maryland Day SOOOO much! I always loved going in the wind tunnel and watching everyone's hair (and skirts! yikes!) go crazy.

I've thought about doing an Ironman sometime in my life, but I don't really swim or bike regularly, so it would take some definite baby steps to get there...if ever. Hopefully your boyfriend forgets his tipsy goals!

  7. I agree with Lisa, start small and have him work his way up. Dang I couldn't even IMAGINE wanting to take on an IM.

  9. I always have grand plans after a few drinks. Hopefully he's only serious about the marathon. Get him training for that and we'll see if the IM is in his (and your) future too!

  10. Hahaha. That's so funny. Everyone thinks they can do anything after a few drinks hey! Training for an Ironman together would be cool though, oneday!

  12. Promises made when you're drunk don't count as much as ones made sober.

    They COUNT MORE.

BF must do ALL these things and if that means you hafta, than you hafta.

    IT'S THE DRUNKARDS' CODE!!1!

  13. A little tipsy? I'd have to be really tipsy to start contemplating an Ironman.

  15. lol about the bf! probably a good thing to avoid the ironman part for now... those things are quite intimidating! hopefully you can remind him that an im has all that swimming and biking before a full marathon. exciting stuff though - hope you guys do decide to train for one so you can smoke him once again ;)

  16. Hilarious!! The last time I was drunk I'm pretty sure I said I would use my red high heels in scandelous situations. Unfortunately, that didn't come true either.

Too funny about the BF and the fact that you would have to do an IronMan if he did. Gotta love that competive spirit. :)

I'm really jealous of your super warm weekend, as I sit here freezing looking out on a grey, rainy day. Can't wait for summer!
