Reframing
Seems like I'm still hanging on to a bit of a cold at the tail end of this plague that I've got, but I'm hoping I've at least turned the corner and I'll be back to my normal healthy self soon. (Hellllo POM juice any time you want to assist my immune system, I'd greatly appreciate it)
As far as what I'm thinking for VB now, my plan is still to do it, but without the expectations of a PR and perhaps with the expectations of a PW.
But it's all about reframing people. If I'm going to PW, I'm going to have a damn fun time doing it. It's a half marathon at the beach. With awesome music and fun neighborhoods and lots of things to take pictures of. I've run races with my camera before, but haven't really used them on the course. So this would be a first for me.
So if race morning I go out and realize it's going to be a crappy day of running for me, I'm going to try really hard not to be disappointed and try to let it go. And then I'm going to try to embrace it and get pictures with the bands and the people who dress up in the neighborhoods and get some great shots of running (errrr maybe walking?) down the boardwalk to the finish line.
I know that even if I can only get a few more decent runs in the before the race, that I'll be able to cross the finish line. So my goal from here on out is to train when I feel better. Shoot for three runs each week with a longish run on the weekend and just try to still have fun on race day.
My mom's going to be there racing. My dad will be there watching. BF will be there, not sure what his plans are just yet and the BF's grandparents might be there. So there will be lots of people, it will be lots of fun. I just need to reframe and if necessary on race day try to drop my competitiveness and just run for fun.

Sounds like you're trying to make the best of the situation...I hope you have fun either way. Maybe you could try to count how many high fives you get?
ReplyDeleteyes, if you can get there in your head and run for fun, it will be a great experience!!
ReplyDeleteGet out there and have some fun! who cares about the finish time. if you get to see a great course and see/hear some cool stuff, just soak in the experience.
ReplyDeleteI hope you kick this cold soon!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely get out there and have fun in VB!
If I was going to PW a half marathon, the first thing I would do would be to find out how many aide stations would be doing beer :-)
ReplyDeleteWay to be optomistic about this race! :)
ReplyDeleteGiven any thought to the possibility that this POM shiz is causing or prolonging your illness? Because I'd say that is at least as likely as its playing any role in your recovery.
ReplyDeleteBecause correct me if I'm wrong, but the only "evidence" you have of its alleged curative properties is some Hillbilly's comment on your blog a couple weeks ago? Yeah, there's some double-blind, laboratory-condition-tested proof for you!
Did he also recommend pulverized possum gizzards? Because I hear that works, too - and also wards off the evil eye.
Good luck with your recovery, sister, and I hope you get well quick enough to enjoy the race.
Sounds like a great race. Good luck and get well soon!
ReplyDeleteIf you are out there enjoying the event and not giving a crap about time, then it doesn't count as a PW. Fun runs are immune. I did the Flying Pig marathon as a fun run but I don't count it as a PW because I wasn't even trying. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteNo matter if you're going to PR or PW....find every camera and make sure to mug it up...that way if nothing else you come away with great pictures (that you have to pay $500/photo for...it's a scam I tells ya). Good luck.
ReplyDeleteYou attitude rules! Sometimes you have a race on the schedule and life intervenes for whatever reason and you just have to go with it.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet you have a great time and I'm not talking about the one on the finishing clock (although that may be great as well).
Great luck!
good plans for va beach. it's fun to 'change it up' and go truly for fun instead of competing against yourself. whether it's a PR, PW or something in between, you're still doing another half marathon! not many people can say they've even done one :)
ReplyDeleteFEEL BETTER!!!
Running with a camera/just for fun is SO much more fun than you even think it will be! Disney was one of the most fun marathons I've ever done :)
