Capitol Hill Class 2016

Editor's Note: I know I owe a bunch of posts on my trip to Ireland. I promise those posts are coming. It's just taking a while to go through pictures, and I'm waiting on some of my friends to upload theirs since they have some of the best ones.

In other news, this morning Megan and I ran the Capitol Hill Classic 10K.

Celebrating the sun's return to DC with @meganerdruns at the #CapitolHillClassic

We had been chatting earlier this week after our Ireland trip how we felt like we needed to do something healthy since we ate so much heavy food on the trip, and we decided the 10K would be fun -- even though neither of us has run more than 5 miles in several months.

It was super chilly and windy in DC this morning, but at least it wasn't raining. DC had been on a 15-day streak of rain, so seeing the sun at the race was a very nice change of pace.

It was in the low 50s at the start, which is actually kind of perfect running weather, but the wind was just brutal. I knew it wouldn't be a super fast race for me, so Megan and I made plans to meet at the finish line.

We lost each other pretty quickly after the gun went off, but actually ended up finding each other in the crowds maybe a half mile in and we ended up running together the whole race.

The course was really crowded and at parts goes on a narrow trail, which was a little bit annoying because there wasn't much room to maneuver. There were lots of times when I felt like I was stepping on someone's heels or had a jogging stroller nipping at my heels.

Other than that though, I really enjoyed this race.

The first part of the course is largely downhill, then it's flat for a while, before climbing back toward the finish.

I was not loving the uphill climb at the end, and if I hadn't been running with Megan, not sure I would have covered those 1.5 miles as quickly as I did.

The official results aren't posted online yet, but by my watch we finished in 57:01, and Megan's watch said 57:00 so, I'm guessing our official time won't be too far off from that.

Even though it wasn't my speediest race ever, it definitely felt good to go out and get a solid run in to kick off the morning.
